Travelling by Air

Air travel can be anxiety-provoking for anyone travelling with kids. 

We get it. 

But, provided you take time to consider your children's needs, it doesn't have to be stressful.
 

What should you take with you on the flight?

Before you pack, research your airline's policy about carry-on luggage. What are you allowed to take with you?

Virgin Australia, for example, gives kids (including infants) the same carry-on baggage allowance as adults — 7kg. 

They also allow you to take two extra items per child (e.g. pram and travel cot).

You should also double-check the airline's policy about food before you pack. Most allow you to bring breastmilk or formula for infants, as well as baby food.
 

When should you fly?

If possible, aim to fly around bedtime. 

Follow their bedtime routine as closely as possible. Change them into their pyjamas, read a bedtime story, give them some milk. Whatever you do at home, replicate it.

This will help them sleep through the flight.
 

How can you make the journey as stress-free as possible?

It should go without saying — but leave yourself plenty of time to get to the airport and check-in.

Everything takes longer with children. So, think about how long you need... And then add an hour.
 

Travelling by Car

Are you staying close to home? Or are you planning a road trip to your destination?

Travelling by car with kids comes with its own unique challenges. But the freedom and flexibility can also make for an awesome family adventure.
 

What's the most important thing to know before you hit the road?

The biggest thing you need to think about here — especially if you're not using your own car — is safety.

Make sure you fit the car seat and/or any restraints properly. We can't stress how important this is.

If you're hiring a car and you're not sure, find someone who can help you install it.
 

How can you keep kids happy on long car journeys?

The bottom line here is that you need to prioritise your kids.

Try not to get frustrated when they want to stop regularly to use the toilet or get bored when you've been in the car for a while.

Plan your journey with them in mind. Plot out places along your route where you can pull over for them to let off steam.

Make the trip fun. Bring new games and books to entertain them and make sure you have an endless supply of snacks and water.
